Sagas of Odenseye Wiki

he Observers were a shadowy group of assassins formed in the earliest days of Niralan, just after their feudal period began upon their arrival to Odenseye's shores. Established as a separate entity from the government, their sole purpose was to integrate into Nirali society as, essentially, sleeper agents. They were carpenters, bakers, servants, nobles, and more, each hiding their true nature expertly.

The Observer's purpose was one of simplicity, deeply rooted in the Nirali ideas of unity: Do not, under any circumstances, let the unity of the Nirali people be threatened. According the the Nirali Chronicles, their original, ancestral homeland had been shattered by war and divisions among the people, forcing the remainder to embark upon a dangerous journey across the ocean to escape. Niras, Niralan's founder and guide through their exodus, formed the group of assassins to ensure that such a thing did not happen again, commanding them to be a separate entity from any king or other ruler. If a ruler stepped out of line, if they threatened to split the people apart, they would be justly killed by a hidden Observer, often with a poison known as Nirali Green Tea. Rarely was the killer ever caught, and in the few instances they were, they would take their own life before any information could be extracted from them.

The Observers maintained their ranks by abducting orphans and other young vagabonds, bringing them back to their headquarters hidden in the mountains for training. There, they would be indoctrinated into the what they called the "Legacy of Unity"; Niras would become a kind of god to them, a figure of reverence. Once their training was complete, they would be sent into the world under the guise of a traveling worker, or a citizen looking to make their home in a new city. They would accept any role happily, dutifully attending to their jobs while observing the people around them, ready to strike when necessary.

During the overthrow of the Yviri Dynasty, the leadership of The Observers, known as the Eight Eyes, were deadlocked on what to do. Half supported Wergeland Yviri, while the others demanded that he be killed for his crimes against the Nirali people. Slowly, the Eyes began to murder each other, until only four were left, two on each side. One of these, a man named Torhin, betrayed the others to Karsus, leading to a great purge. The Observers, their identities revealed, were dragged from their homes and killed on Karsus' orders, one and all.
